What were some tasks of a infantry squad during WWII?
What are some examples of missions a squad of soldiers would go on during WWII in the European theatre? What were some objectives or special missions/tasks? Please no rude comments…..
My mother’s cousin, Floyd Land, from just north of Atlanta was assigned to Army infantry and part of D-Day. His division was assigned to “parallel” just south of main divisions entering Europe. Their mission, to “eliminate” any attacking German force(s) approaching from the south, if any. Allies were mainly concerned during initial attacks about the German “Tiger” tank divisions with no idea of their locations. As history shows General Rommel’s decision to position the “Tigers” where needed that may have resulted more favorably for Germany was “denied” by Hitler.
As Floyd Land’s division “pushed” forward, squads (he volunteered for many and consisted of approx. 8 men +/-) were sent ahead to “scout”, determine possible German locations, road usage and by whom in the area, movement of any type, etc. Each squad carried a radio to report back to “main body”. Squads, in this case, were used to keep main division informed and prevent “entering” into unexpected conflict (ambush). If squad members were “killed” or “captured” as Floyd Land was the Germans had no idea they were part of an “unknown” division.
Hope this helps.
