What wood should i use for my custom pool cue?

im am doing a project in woodshop that i can pick what id like to do. i need to know which type of wood would be best.

The shaft should definitely be maple, the best piece you can find. The ideal piece would be from a very old tree and have absolutely no blemishes of any kind. The butt end can be any number of different woods, but just making it out of maple too would probably be simplest.

I wouldn’t worry too much though. The chances of you making a pool cue that a person could actually play with are next to nothing. The wood needs to be hung and dried for several months, and you need special blades for your lathe that the typical woodshop does not have. A guy I used to play with made cues and said that the first one you make almost always comes out as an unplayable piece of crap, and that’s with the proper tools and a professional cuemaker looking over your shoulder.
