If you are going to be a successful Whitetail Deer Hunter you are going to need to do your homework. If you want to be the best your going to have to do what others wont. Read whitetail deer hunting books, scout, ask questions, document and plan.

First of all you will need a good understanding of the habits of the Whitetail Deer. Here are some critical things most hunters don’t know, overlook or just don’t take the time to learn. If you plan to hunt for big deer it is most important to have a goal then to make a plan of action. Without this knowledge your plan will be incomplete and you will most likely not reach your goals for the season.

• feeding and bedding habits of big buck and how they travel between the two areas
• how trophy buck react before, during and after the rut
• how different weather patterns affect their daily routine
• Behavior difference between trophy buck and small buck/doe
• understanding what deer do besides browsing and sleeping
• how hunting pressure affect the movement of monster buck
• how to scout for big buck – what signs to look for
• how to strategically place trees stands and blinds
• scent and wind direction
• Does the area your hunting hold trophy buck

There are a few ways to obtain necessary information to develop a good plan of action. I would highly recommend to get a notebook and start keeping a log and a map of the area you plan to hunt. 1) If you live in the area you are hunting you can drive around the roads and note when and where you see deer If you don’t live near where you plan to hunt you can talk with farmers in the area. Find out where they are seeing deer or find out what the talk is in the local sporting goods stores.

Tip - When moving from feed areas to bedding areas big Whitetail Deer don’t travel on the same trails as small buck and doe they meander between the two. Find out how and when they move and you will know where to place your tree stand or blind.

Tip - Big Whitetails don’t like areas with a lot of hunting pressure. Avoid areas where most people in your area are hunting then look for thick cover with little hunting pressure. If you own your own land dedicate a section as a safe zone (preferably a thick overgrown area) Then don’t ever hunt in that area. You will create a good spot for big buck to hang out.
