Man Being Eaten By Alligator Makes Good

You don’t have to pay a lot of attention to the Movies to hear it, because it’s everywhere. It’s what has become known as the ‘Wilhelm scream’, one of three short, pained screams that seems just a little too antiquated for the big-budget pain yelps happening all around it. Easily mistaken for the ever popular masters of Indie production music ‘A Wilhelm Scream’ (bet it’s your first time too), the Wilhelm scream hollers up in over 216 films and even some video games.

The story of the ‘Wilhelm Scream’ phenomenon really begins with sound designer Benjamin Burtt Jr. (who has worked for Lucasfilm and more recently, Pixar). discovering a reel labeled ‘Man being eaten by alligator’ at the sound effects library at Warner Bros. Working at the time on ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope’, Burtt was already familiar with the scream. As a sound effect enthusiast, he had noticed it used countless times before in many Warner Bros. movies. In fact, he’d already incorporated the scream into a film called ‘The Scarlett Blade’, but ‘Star Wars’ was the first film where he had access to the source. Burtt adopted the scream as a personal signature for films he worked on, putting instances in every ‘Star Wars’, ‘Indiana Jones’ and other films like ‘Willow’ and ‘More American Graffiti’. Richard Anderson, who worked with Burtt on Indiana Jones, carried on the tradition and added the scream to ‘Poltergeist’, ‘Batman Returns’, ‘Planet of the Apes’ and others.

So why is it the ‘Wilhelm scream’? Burtt remembered the sound effect from a 1953 picture called ‘Charge at Feather River’, where the scream is used when a character named Pvt. Wilhelm is shot with an arrow. Research has since indicated that the sound effect was probably created for another western, ‘Distant Drums’, made in 1951. As a dubbed sound effect, the vocal was provided by another actor. Records indicate that it’s likely to have been Sheb Wooley, a character actor who was a bit part in the film and renowned for doing such work. Sheb Wooley was also a novelty musician whose music library included the 1958 release ‘Purple People Eater’.
