Question about the 500 S&W?
I have heard opposing opinions regarding it’s power. Many people claim it’s more powerful than most long arms, with the exception of the very large hunting rifles. Others claim that it’s weaker than most long arms.
Last I checked, “most” long arms don’t have the power to take down an elephant. A 500 Smith and Wesson, loaded with a 500-700 grain round can stop any living thing on the planet. Especially the 700 grain hardcast round.
Of course, there are some very high powered large game rifles that surpass the power, but realistically, it would seem that the 500 S&W will have more stopping power than most long arms. Especially those used on the battle field. (We’re talking short to medium ranges, and withholding discussion of terms of accuracy, distance, recoil, etc)
As a person who hunts with a S&W 500 (8.375 inch barrel) I know that is a powerful round. The Javelina I shot at about 60 yards was knocked off it feet and went into shock for a couple of seconds causing it to roll down a small hill then it got up and ran 20 yards and was dead in less than 45 seconds (gut and one lung shot). The Elk I just recently killed with my S&W 500 was at about 103 yards. I’ll be honest that was probably the toughest shot I’ve ever taken on any any game using open sights. I hit the Elk and he just dropped, because I hit him below the spine. He couldn’t get up so he didn’t run at all and I then quickly finished him off. The thing that surprised me the most was the exit hole on the Elk I was using Buffalo bore cast bullets 440 gr @ 1500 fps and the exit hole looked like it was a .75 inch wide (I don’t know the exact measurement, but it was bigger than the entrance hole) and there was a few small pieces fat and and small chunk of fur laying on the ground that was blown out from the Elk. I have hunted a variety of game mostly with .223, 30-06, and .300 win mag. (all with Barnes TSX) from my experience the S&W 500 did the most damage, but that is due only to its .5 diameter. So I know first hand how powerful it is, but I’ll be honest it isn’t going to be more powerful than most high power rifles from 0-100 yards, because the 700 Grain ammo @ 1200 fps. is rated at 2240 Ft/lbs of energy out of a 10 inch barrel (Ballisticsupply.com). My buffalo bore is a 440 grain @ around 1500 fps is rated at 2196 ft/lbs of energy. So a comparable cartridge to the S&W 500 I found is a .25-06 with a 100 grain bullet @ 3210 fps is rated at 2288 ft/lbs of energy (Federalammunition.com). That is in terms of energy I won’t get to much into detail about the “stopping power”, but like I mentioned above due to the 0.5 inch diameter of the bullet it will inflict a lot of damage to an animal. A .30 caliber bullet will have good expansion at less than a 100 and can expand to about .45 inches the difference is that the .5 caliber bullet is already at .5 inch when it enters the .30 needs a little time to expand. So if one defines stopping power as damage inflicted (which I disagree with) I guess one could argue it has the stopping power of a .30-06 or .308. One last thing elephant hunting is done at close ranges like 25 to 75 yards that is why it is possible to use a S&W 500 on elephant, but I would think it has to be a headshot.
