Warrior Samurai

What does one call a former samurai warrior in feudal Japan?
When I say “former”, I mean as in they left their profession and craft due to either being dishonored or disgruntled.
Great question as I think that most people kind of blend the role of the samurai in the Early Modern/Edo period (1600-1868) with that of the Medieval/Kamakura (1192-1333) and Muromachi (1336-1573) period.
Okay so the medieval period the samurai was a social group and not a class. People who did not want to be a samurai anymore simply became whatever they wanted, most becoming farmers or monks. However, samurai were also farmers and merchants; not limited to a certain profession.
In the Edo period the samurai were one of the four classes that was solidified by Hideyoshi, but continued by Ieyasu. Once you were a samurai there was nothing you could do to get out of hit. There were a series of social laws that prevented you from doing certain things liek eating certain types of food or wearing certain clothes that were only for certain classes. Generally, the samurai class getting the nicer stuff. But, a lot of master-less samurai, ronin, did many things ranging from being hired debt collectors, teachers, and sword masters.
The most recent book in Japanese on the samurai that I have seen discusses the origin of the Yakuza from these ronin.
The most important thing about samurai to remember is that they operated at every level of society and were everything from farmers to rulers.
I hope this helps

The Last Samurai [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] $6.07 Whether Tom Cruise’s portrayal of a 19th century American soldier cum samurai warrior will be remembered with the same pangs of pop-cultural bemusement that befell John Wayne playing Genghis Khan remains to be seen. But its musical soundtrack does mark an auspicious occasion: pop musician-turned-composer Hans Zimmer’s 100th score since beginning his film career in 1988. A pioneer of fusing both th… |

Hero (Music from the Original Soundtrack) $7.10 Tan Dun straddles the very different worlds of concert music and film scores, winning admirers in both. He’s perhaps best known for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which shares with Hero a visual poetry that transcends the sword-filled action film genre. In Crouching Tiger, Tan Dun’s music was often striking. In Hero he often lapses into repetition and cliché, a failing compensated f… |
