War Swords

Is there a chance swords could have been used after the civil war?
I’m writing a book about alternate reality where swords are used more then guns. Is it a possibility that after the civil war ended, fighting styles could have reverted back to swords? Or were guns being used too long and technology came too far to go back? If so, when would be a good time period too faze out guns for an alternate future reality?
Swords were definitely used in combat following the American Civil War. Swords were used as the principal side-arms of officers as well as the primary weapon of cavalry units until the dawn of the 20th century. For example, swords were used in cavalry charges as well as hand to hand infantry combat during the Franco-Prussian War, the American Indian Wars, the Red River Rebellion and North West Rebellion in Canada, and the Boer War, to name a few. As well, during the First World War, swords were used in the very few cavalry charges that occurred, one notable example being at the Battle of Moreuil Wood. During the Second World War, a British Lt. Col Jack Churchill was known to carry a basket-hilted claymore into battle.
So, in short, yes, swords were used after the civil war.
