Blackhawk was a native American tribal leader in Wisconsin, Minnesota & Illinois areas back in the 1820s if I rememeber right

Lincoln enlisted in that “war” and was elected a captain of his local militia group; he once stated that he was as proud of thatelection from his small platoon as any election he ever won in his life

To answer your question: there was gross racial hatred against tribes by many different groups of white Americans; Lincoln was forced to defend an elderly Indian that wandered into the town where his company was staying. When his men threatened the man Lincoln defended him and told them that they would have to fight him first; they let him go
