How To Choose Kitchen Cabinets That Are Right For You

The first thing you’ll need to consider is the difference between particle board, which most people are at least a bit familiar with, and medium density fiber board, which is used in some cabinets. MDF is generally considered superior to normal fiber board. It’s an engineered product, and it’s made from residuals of both soft and hard woods. They are broken down into fibers that are then treated with a resin and wax binder. The last step is to form the mixture into boards, and this is done with specially engineered machines that use high degrees of temperature and pressure to shape the material. MDF boards are made from woods, so they’re usually termed engineered woods.

Regular particle board or fiber board is not as dense. There are more air holes in particle board, as it’s made of wood chips, shavings, and other particles–thus the name. It too is an engineered wood. MDF and particle boards need a wood veneer, which makes them more aesthetically pleasing when used for kitchen cabinets and provides some degree of protection. Both board types will take on damage if they’re exposed to too much water or other forms of moisture. While either type of board is treated to handle a bit of moisture, too much will cause it to swell and distort.

As to the veneers that are applied to either, you will have a choice between wood veneers and non-wood veneers. Of the two choices, wood veneers are the more expensive.

Kitchen cabinets that are made of actual wood are of course substantially more expensive. The wood variations are certainly plentiful. Walnut, oak, cherry, and maple are a few of the most popular cabinet woods. Many of these all wood cabinets will have in lieu of particle board construction; they will use plywood boxes instead. Plywood uses real wood that has been rendered into thin strips. These strips of wood are laid on a compress and glued together facing in different directions, which gives the plywood extra strength. The plywood process is complete when high-temperature machinery turns the glued strips into a large sheet or panel of plywood. The grades used to judge plywood are similar to the grading system used in most American schools. Cabinets constructed an A is of higher quality than a C for example. Plywood can hold a lot of weight, and is very durable, as it’s a high tensile wood.

Another term that you should know, especially if you are looking at kitchen cabinets online, is RTA. The RTA is an acronym meaning ready to assemble.
