How to properly clean a Katana/wakizashi/tanto using common materials?

I don’t really have the time or money to go out and buy a cleaning kit, so how can a clean my katana using common household materials without ruining it long-term?

A good sword cleaning kit is only $10-$20. Anything other than the proper materials and technique is very likely to scratch the blade. If of course what you have is a wall hanger, you need not be asking this.
