Wakizashi Sword

Is there a two wakizashi style?
Ok, I saw the movie, “Ninja Assassin” and there’s a scene where he practices using two ninja swords (not full length katana… and straight blades — I don’t know if they have a name, so I’m using the term wakizashi b/c they’re a middle length blade). Is there such a sword style, or was that pure Hollywood?
I don’t mean Musashi’s, Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū, which uses a katana and wakizashi. Nor do I mean the Chinese, dual broadsword style. I’m asking about a Japanese style that uses the kind of swords mentioned above.
If it’s pure Hollywood, that’s cool. I just want to know. Thanks
The blade used would be the hollywood style ninjato, though there were straight bladed swords in Japan (chokuto).
As for a two-sword style, there is not one (again, other than Niten Ichi Ryu). That said, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t done, though it probably wasn’t done in the way that you’re thinking (Squaring off, bringing two short swords to a fight). However, so much of what existed in Japanese arts has been lost to time and politics.
From an aspect of Ninpo Taijutsu called Juppo Sesshho (Though Juppo Sessho exists in Budo in many places, we’re taught it as Ninpo, which is considered to be a step further than budo… It’s complicated) there’s an idea/teaching that, if I have weapons on me, I can use:
1.) No weapons.
2.) My weapons.
3.) My enemy’s weapons.
4.) Both of our weapons.
So, if I have, for instance, a wakizashi in my hand, and he’s attacking with daijodan shomen giri, I may step in and slip the blade of my wakizashi between his arms to lock against the tsuka, draw his wakizashi, and use it to dispatch him.
In all likelihood, this would have been demonstrated using some form of small weapon as an extension of the arm, like kunai. At this level of training, the emphasis is not on the techniques, but on acting without thought, and without concern for the outcome. This may sound counter-intuitive, but it’s actually quite sensible once you get to a certain point in training.
Hope that helps. Koteki Ryuda Juppo Sessho no Jutsu is one of my favorite parts of ninpo, and I’m really glad to find a question that gave me an excuse to think in those terms. Thank you!
