Why We Should Honor Retired Military Personnel

For those who live in America, the patriotic season begins in late May with Memorial Day and stretches out until November, when Veterans Day is celebrated. There are also other patriotic holidays during that period, such as Flag Day in June, the Fourth of July and Labor Day in September. Those are the major patriotic holidays but there are also others that are lesser-known. The first, Armed Forces Day, actually falls before Memorial Day. Then we have Citizenship Day and Patriot Day in September, followed by United Nations Day right before Halloween in October.

Many people in the U.S. take the major patriotic holidays seriously, as well as some of the minor ones. This is at least partially because so many people have veterans in their immediate families, or at least know people who served in the American armed forces. For them, the patriotic holidays are personal. That is probably the reason why many people use free vintage Memorial Day postcards or veterans clip art to send cards that honor veterans for Veterans Day. A simple card to a retired military officer or soldier can make a world of difference to a veteran who might think his or her contribution to our national well-being has been forgotten.

This especially applies to U.S. soldiers coming home from serving in the Middle East. They have seen and experienced things few have and deserved to be thanked for doing that on our behalf. After all, Veterans Day isn’t a popular, joyful celebration like Independence Day, so you wouldn’t blame veterans for thinking their countrymen don’t care. Chances are, no one ran around waving bunches of American flags when they returned. And there are few parties thrown for Veterans Day either. That’s probably because most people don’t want to remember sad things.

It would probably be better to just thank a retired veteran every time we meet one. That will let them know we appreciate their contributions on more than just one day a year. That small remembrance can mean a lot to someone who has served their country but may feel forgotten.
