How to Make Brownies From the Midwest – Cousin’s Old Fashion and Chocolate Syrup Brownie Recipes

Whether you are looking for a treat for the family, taking dessert on a picnic or to a church function, or just about anything else, brownies are a versatile treat that almost everyone loves. This article has a variety of recipes to please everyone. From my late cousin Judy’s Favorite Brownies to a delicious Brown Sugar Brownie, these recipes are sure to please.  My cousin Judy died several years ago after battling breast cancer for years.  This was one of her favorite treats and I enjoy them very much.  Not only are they tasty, they remind me of her.  The Chocolate Syrup Brownies are also an old recipe from the midwest.

JUDY’S BROWNIES
This was my late cousin, Judy’s, recipe for brownies. They are very good.

3/4 cup cocoa
1/2 tsp baking soda
2/3 cup oil*, divided
1/2 cup boiling water
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 1/3 cups flour
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
chopped nuts**, optional

Stir cocoa and baking soda together in a mixing bowl. Blend in 1/3 cup of the oil. Add the boiling water and stir until thickened. Stir in sugar, eggs, and the remaining third cup of oil. Stir until smooth. Add the flour, vanilla and salt. Pour into a lightly greased 13 x 9 x2-inch baking pan or 2 8-inch square pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes for oblong pan or 30-32 minutes for square pans. Cool. Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting, if desired.

*To update this recipe, use canola oil for its’ health benefits.
**In Southern Indiana we often used hickory nuts. Pecans are a good substitution. Or use your favorite nuts.

CHOCOLATE SYRUP BROWNIES WITH FROSTING RECIPES

BROWNIES:
1/2 cup oleo
1 cup sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup + 1 tbsp flour
1 can chocolate syrup
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream oleo and sugar together well. Add eggs and stir. Add vanilla. Stir in flour and add chocolate syrup and mix well. Add nuts if desired. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees in a greased 15 1/2 x 10 1/4 x 3/4-inch pan. Serves approximately 28.

FROSTING FOR ABOVE BROWNIES:
6 tbsp oleo
6 tbsp milk
1 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup chocolate chips

Melt oleo in a 1-quart saucepan, add milk and sugar. Stir well and bring to a boil. Boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate chips until melted.

Note: Oleo is margarine.  I prefer using butter as it is my belief that our bodies are better suited to natural foods rather than man-made.  The option is yours.
