Viking Barbarian

whats the difference between a viking and barbarian or are they the same?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOKay, Terry, no, just no.
First of all, VIKING, not a verb. It comes from Old Norse Vikingr (pronounced Wee-kingr). -ingr often denoted people(in Old English it was wicing). This is similar to English underling, overling etc.
It meant someone who came from the Fjords. It could have come from an older root wic, meaning “camp, village” which would make sense for the camps the vikings had to make when they went out on raids.

Barbarian comes from a Greek root for someone who is foreign, which in turn comes from an Indo-European root that was a mimic of other people’s language, in essence, they don’t know how to speak so they “barbar”. Anthropologically speaking, there is no barbarians, there are just people who have their own culture, language, and society.

In the more modern senses, a Viking would be viewed as a Barbarian by the rest of Europe. But like I said, we now can understand the Viking language (Old Norse) and inmany respects, the culture, so they aren’t really as barbaric as once thought.
