What happens to LED torches when the battery is low?

Do they gradually lose brightness like incandescents, or do they abruptly stop working?
I ask because I have an LED flashlight and despite having 21 LEDs, it is pretty dim.

The better ones maintain a fairly constant brightness until the battery is almost depleted and may even have a “battery low” indicator built into the switch. At some point they will shut down.
