How can you tell if a snake is harmful or not?

I posted a question earlier about killing snakes by my house, and of course there are the people who love snakes or whatever that get offended, but the fact is that I have no idea if they are venomous or not, so I kill them. We have no animal control, live miles away from town, and all snakes look alike to me, so searching the internet to look isn’t going to help me. What are distinguishing factors between snakes. Around here there are King snakes, Chicken snakes (don’t know if they are the same thing as a king snake) water moccasins and timber rattlers, which I have never seen a rattler, but I think I would know that. So what is the difference between a chicken snake and a venomous snake?

The best way to tell if a snake is harmful or not is to know what each one looks like. From the species you listed, it is obvious you are in the South Eastern US …… but a specific location would help a lot more.

The best way to know what is harmful is just to memorize what each on looks like in your area.

Water Moccassains(Cottonmouths) ….. easily identifiable as they open their mouth and reveal an extremely white mouth …hence the name “Cottonmouth http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/staticfiles/NGS/Shared/StaticFiles/animals/images/800/eastern-cottonmouth-water-snake.jpg

Copperhead(if you have Timbers and Cottonmouths, then you def have copperheads) … Copperheads hardly ever move when they feel threatened. They would rather try to camoflauge themselves and wait for the threat to pass. http://www.kingsnake.com/louisiana/pics/copperhead1.jpg

Note how each one of those snakes has a triangular head … this is indicative of Pit Vipers. They also have a small pit under their nostrils as well.
