Can i take a small $7 3 inch blade knife on plane in luggage?

its a tanto tactical butterfly knife, 5 inch handle 3 inch blade 8 inches open. can i put it in my suitcase. not the carry on, the suitcase. my friend brought a 12 inch dagger from egypt to texas i dont see why i cant take a butterfly knife
Ok I have found out that they are illegal to carry around but not to own. So if its in my checked baggage would I get into any trouble?

Knives are permitted in checked luggage. The cost is completely irrelevant.

Your problem is that butterfly knives are illegal or restricted in some manner in some states. Simply having it may be a felony.

- In New York, the butterfly knife has been determined not to be a gravity knife.

- In Utah, Balisong knives are legal as long as they are not concealed.

You should find out if it is legal to have in the state where you reside, and also the state to which you are going. If not, then leave it at home. The possible legal hassles are not worth it.
