What does the military sword represent?

Every military has had a ‘sword’… what does it represent?
Dear Jim: is your sword ‘retired’ or is it entrusted to you always? and what happens to a ‘bad sword’?

It definitely represents tradition.

Prior to rifles, we only had swords. It was a weapon that took a lot of skill to wield. In that regards, the rich were the only ones that could afford them.

Think of the movie Braveheart when William Wallace touched his uncles sword and ended up with his fathers swords. Also think of all the people that used so many other types of weapons.

My enlisted NCO Sword and my Officer’s Sword represent a lot of tradition to me. I know its the same type of sword that has been used for so many years. The rifles come and go, but the Marine Corps Sword and KBar (for the most part, it was changed and I didnt like it, I keep the original) have stayed for very long period of time.
