how do I harden my lawn tractor cutting blades? They seem to be made of soft steel and dull&nick easily.?

I wouldn’t, they are soft for a reason, never try to temper one!!!. The softer steel allows the blade to absorb engine vibration and the occasional stump or rock without becoming brittle and breaking. Even gun barrels are relatively soft for the same reason. So, you can take a break and sharpen your blade or dance around a chunk of sharp steel on it’s way to decapitating someone. It is possible to case harden or nitride a blade and have it de-embrittled but I don’t do small blades anymore. One other option is to hard chrome the blade, have it machine ground and de-embrittled. You could buy a couple dozen sharp new blades for either option. RScott
