is it necessary to temper a stainless steel blade ?

i found a used and old knife without a handle and im planning to restore it.

Yep, definatly not in the golf section, but again, yes it would have to be tempered. The edge would be way to soft to hold an edge without tempering the blade. You will not have to re-temper the edge as that may make it even more brittle. Just find a good wetstone and a little elbow grease and you should end up with a great blade.

My father used to take old mill files (the long ones made in the early to mid 1900′s) and shape them down into blades using a grinder and then would polish them and fit a deer antler handle onto them as gifts. Older steel was of much better quality than today’s steel and holds a better edge. Good luck with your knife.
