Decorating 101: Relaxing Bath

Many people consider the bathroom to be nothing more than a room where you shower or bathe, not giving much thought to the room’s appearance or the ways in which it might be used. Why not think of it instead as your own little private sanctuary—a place to escape to! Nothing is better than after a long, hard day at work to have a place where all that stress can be relaxed away and your spirits can be rejuvenated.

It’s difficult to find a room in your home where you can actually escape the rest of the family. Although you sometimes need time to yourself, young children often follow along right on your heels. Everyone needs and deserves a little time now and then to unwind. With a little atmosphere, the bathroom can be the perfect place to do this.

Get Rid of That Cold, Sterile Look
Is your bathroom plain, looking like no more than just a bathroom? Is it decorated with nothing more than stainless-steel towel racks and toilet-paper holders—the works? There’s nothing fancy; everything is pretty basic and straightforward. If this describes your bathroom, then this is where you need to start.

So how are you going to soften the look? First add some wrought-iron towel racks or white or pastel colored wood. Lavender, sea foam, or another soft, relaxing shade is perfect for the walls. Carpet in the bathroom is always nice, or go with colorful ceramic tiles. If your linoleum is plain-looking and hardly noticeable, definitely consider updating your floors.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
It’s not uncommon for a large bathroom mirror to look a little stark. If you have a mirror that’s just hanging there with nothing around it, perhaps it’s time to make a change. If you can, invest in a mirror trimmed with gold edges, or place wallpaper border around the one you have. To create an interesting look, use a border that contrasts with the color of the walls. Or why not change the shape of the mirror completely? You can add a romantic touch, for instance, with an oval mirror.

Decorate the Tub
Spruce up that tub, especially if you’re lucky enough to have a garden tub or one with wide edges. For starters, set greenery around the edges. You can make the tub look really inviting with small ceramic pots filled with herbs and greenery. Once you add some votive candles, you’ll be ready to soak in a tub filled with bubbles. And the delicious scents of the candles will help float your worries away. It’s a wonderful experience to light a few candles, fill the tub, and bathe in the warm candlelight glow.

Accents Pull It All Together
If you’re looking for a way to pull your new bathroom together, try adding a few accents. An oblong or square basket to hold a few bath towels makes the perfect touch. If the bathroom is big enough for a small table, you can always add one. Paint it a contrasting color and decorate it by stenciling flowers and greenery around the edges. A few clear glass containers to hold cotton balls and Q-tips will work great as well. Attractive body splash and lotion bottles make great accent pieces as well. Of course, you can also add more plants and more candles—whatever it takes to make it your own.

It’s so much more relaxing to bathe in a room that’s both exquisitely beautiful and wonderfully smelling. Why jump into the tub, only to jump right out again? Instead, you can take the time to relax, unwind, and thoroughly enjoy yourself. All you need is your favorite book or magazine and a glass of wine, and this can be the most peaceful part of your day. Who said bathroom décor needs to be boring?
