When the post-punk scene started to fragment in the early 1980s, one of the subcultures to emerge was the Gothic movement, centered around listening to bass heavy, brooding songs and primarily all black outfits borrowing from fashions as diverse as Victorian times to bondage and fetish wear.

The Cure, Bauhaus, Souxsie and The Banshees, The Sisters of Mercy and The Cult all started to be linked to the Goth world, although many of these later dissociated themselves with it. However, in reality anythin that was was followed by Goths was Goth, as there was actually no uniting sound; even the lyrical subjects, although normally downbeat, were dissimilar; think about the introspection of “Pornography” era The Cure, compared with the bombastic noise of The Sisters of Mercy on Floodland.

In addition to the black clothes, hair coloring and eyeliner, a lot of Goths also chose to wear crucifixes and religious emblems. With the Bauhaus anthem “Bela Lugosi Is Dead” came the cod-horror theatricals favored by bands like Alien Sex Fiend, and in addition to the bats and crucifixes arrived skull jewelry and other objects.

Although countless misitreperted the imagery of Goth, thinking it to be associated with violence or suicidal tendencies, the truth is the movement was in truth an accepting one – “anything goes” it was saying, and the appearance of death in the image was more related to the idea of taking pleasure in limited time, rather than actually wishing it. In this manner it was just like the veritas veritatum paintings of the renaissance, where artists contrasted man’s vanity – intellectual pursuits and pleasure of living – with the vanity of life. The latter was highlighted by a skull, and also sometimes underlined by an hourglass or candlestick.

Following the usage of skull jewelry by Goths, the death’s head image was also used by Heavy Metal and bikers, even though the use was completely different. While Goth was introspective and at times self indulgent, Heavy  Metal was a kind of cartoon rock without any real substance behind it.

These days skull jewelry can be found in many designs. Not only the stark metal death’s head, it can also be seen in examples of precious metals and diamond covered.
