What’s the difference between a silver finish and a lacqer finish on a brass instrument?

I used to think it was a matter of how you wanted your horn to look, but now I’m hearing it affects tone. Supposedly, one sounds brighter and the other sounds richer. So what exactly does the finish do for the sound?

WOW…that is an interesting question. I am not so sure the difference is real obvious! If I had to guess…the laquer finish is probably the “brighter” sounding and the silver is the “richer”. I am deriving my opinion from when I used to be in the band. I say…get the one you like the appearence of. I had a tri-colored trombone. It had brass, nickle, and copper that was laquered. You will bond with your instrument whichever one you pick. It is like picking out a puppy! When you become professional…you can get the custom-made ones. A school band director should have an opinion.
