What can I paint on a SCA shield?

I have no heraldry yet, but I’m trying to find something kosher with the society to paint on my shield. Is there anything, or would I pretty much be stuck with just a plain color?

If you put something on your shield you run the risk of having it become what you are known as on the field. You don’t have to have your device approved to use it so if there is something you like that you would expect you want to incorporate into your device you might start with that.

Despite what you might hear in Northshield, heralds aren’t evil and even if you aren’t at the point of completing your device they might be able to give you some suggestions of things.
