Suggestions for cleaning my geldings sheath?

He needs it cleaned bad. He is 24 and the last time I remember having to clean him is when he was a lot younger.
I was going to have the vet do it but found out it cost $135 and I can’t afford that. So, the vet is selling me a sedative shot for only $15 and I hope it works…Anybody have any idea on what to use to clean gooey tarry substance?

Tarry? It shouldn’t be tarry…I was going to tell you how to do it, but if he’s got gooey tarry stuff on him, then maybe the vet ought to look at him first.

I have never had to use a sedative, not even on (well behaved, older) stallions. I used warm water, sterile gauze pads and Excalibur sheath cleaner.
