Sketching: When should I use a sharpener, and when a Sandpaddle sharpener?

I’m very new at sketching, and I’d like to know what the best use for a sand paddle sharpener is. Is it just to dull out pencils that come out too sharp, or are there other uses I don’t know about? Thanks

Unfortunately, this is an artists choice. You’ll develop a feel for it as you experience drawing. But a basic rule of thumb is that you should use a sharpener when you have small areas of shading and a sand paddle when you need to shade in large areas, thus creating a large flat graphite surface.
