Explore Island Capitals On Mallorca Or Malta Holidays

The islands of the Med are varied and packed with things to see and do. Though it’s true they are blessed with golden sunshine, beautiful beaches and glistening seas, the islands also boast capital cities to rival some of the best in Europe. Malta’s capital city, Valletta, is an example of a great island town with a huge wealth of historic sights – there are over 300 monuments there. Wherever you stay on your Malta holidays you’ll find there is so much in the way of top sights and amazing culture right on your doorstep.

To tour the capital in style, hop on a horse-drawn carriage and take in the graceful architecture and romantic atmosphere of the city. Take in the St John’s Cathedral, complete with a massive signed painting by Caravaggio, the famous painter. For education and views, the National War museum – situation within Fort St Elmo, right on the headland – is a definite must-see.

The Spanish island of Palma, with its mix of graceful architecture, modern art, cafe culture, smart shops and buzzing tapas bars is the ideal place to spend Mallorca holidays. Definitely check out the incredible Old Town as well. For places to eat, go no further than the local tapas restaurants which you’ll find on every other corner, and which serve tasty traditional dishes. It’s also a nice idea to take a walk along the promenade, where you can also take in the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. Marvel at the impressive gothic cathedral, the restoration of which was overseen by Gaudi. If you’d like to take a break from seeing the sights and enjoy some retail therapy, there is a huge selection of modern shops and boutiques in town.

For a day of basking and swimming at the beach on your Palma holidays, there are sandy shores within easy walking distance to the east at Portixol. There are also some great white sand beaches just west of the city, accessible by bus.
