12 Motorcycle Deaths A Day: How To Help

To help us bring you more informative articles we subscribed to Google Alerts to get information on Florida motorcycle accidents.  It hasn’t been good.  We have been reading about 5-8 motorcycle fatalities daily.  Inattentive drivers hitting motorcycle riders, motorcycle riders being side swiped, and more.  Motorcycle riders are also to blame.  Half of all single vehicle motorcycle crashes relate to problems negotiating a curve.  So be careful while riding, and follow a few tips to have safer rides in the future.

We want to hear less about serious and fatal motorcycle accidents.  Like we said, we read about 5-8 new fatalities a day.  However, we don’t see all the reports.  The US averages 12 motorcycle fatalities a day; 50% more than 15 years ago.  Pare of the problem could be higher powered bikes.  Engine size has increased 25% since 1990.  Night riding is also a problem.  60% of single vehicle motorcycle crashes happen at night.  We want this fixed.  Motorcycle accidents hurt families and loved ones.  Safer riding and smarter riding could drastically reduce these numbers.

Our first tip is to know your bike.  When you purchase a new motorcycle make sure you are comfortable and can handle it. Not everyone is capable of being a Moto GP racer, so don’t get the biggest engine you can find.  During the test ride of the bike make sure it is comfortable beneath you, you are comfortable with the shifting, and that you are comfortable with the acceleration and braking.  Many people get an over powered bike thinking they will learn it better and grow into it.  Too often this is not the case.  When riding a motorcycle the most important thing is to keep the bike under you.  If the motorcycle is too jumpy or twitchy while you ride go down an engine size and try again.

The second tip is to ride during the day and to know the road if riding at night.  Night time is very dangerous for motorcycle riders.  At night other drivers have a harder time gauging speed and distance of other vehicles.  With a bikes faster stop time this can lead to serious rear end collisions.  To try and avoid this make sure you lights work well and are unobstructed.  Also be sure you wear reflective clothing so you are more visible to other drivers.  Night driving is also dangerous if you don’t know the roads well.  At night curves are more difficult to see and negotiate.  In daylight you can see farther ahead and around upcoming curves.  At night you can only see what is illuminated by your headlamp.  Animals can also be a danger.  While a motorcyclist can easily maneuver, animals around curves can lead to the possibility of an accident.

Hopefully after reading these tips you will take to heart the advice we have given.  We would love to see the accident numbers come down to levels from 1996 and 1997.  Some of these accidents wouldn’t have to happen if people purchased bikes within their ability and knew the roadways better.  So please, have fun, but be safe during your rides.
