What is needed to know for pocket knife maintenance ?

I my pocket knife that’s 440 stainless steel it has some small chips on the blade part after cutting some cans in half how can I get rid of the chips, how often should I sharpen the blade and can I sharpen a serrated edges? if so how?

The first thing to know about pocket knife maintenance is to treat it properly. You should protect your cutting blade and not use it for things like prying, chipping, scrapping, sawing through tough materials, etc.

Your quality knife is a tool that will last a lifetime. But, if you go cutting through cans with it, you’ll ruin it. Buy a multi-tool with a can opener, saw, screw driver, etc if you need other tools.

Sharpening is to put a sharp edge on a dull knife. Sharpening is not meant to grind out chips and knicks. Every time you sharpen a knife, you remove metal. You’d have to grind a significant amount to remove the chips, and then your cutting surface would be off.

Sharpening a serrated knife is a job for a professional knife shop, and should not be needed very often.

Other maintenace includes cleaning the knife. Just wipe it in the field and wash it in hot water at home. A hair dryer is handy for completely drying the knife. Even stainless will rust. put a drop of oil on the hinge. Store it outside its sheath. Don’t lose it.
