My puppy is reversing behaviors! Help!?
My puppy is about 8 weeks old. I got her at the age of 6 weeks. At the time, she did a decent job with going out to the bathroom in the grass near my apartment building. When left alone, she had no more than one or two accidents in the area where she was confined. In the past 3 or 4 days, she seems to be reversing all her good habits. She has begun biting non-stop, which I try to firmly correct and teach her no, but it seems to not work, and I feel like I just get on to her too much. Also, she was never happy about being left alone, but it seems much worse, with her crying and howling more, using the bathroom all over the kitchen where she is staying, and shaking.
The biggest problem though is she has become Incredibly scared of the outdoors, day or night. I now have the hardest time getting her to use the bathroom with out running in fear of every noise or motion she sees.
Am I doing something wrong, or is it just her age?
Any advice on calming her down?
Thank you.
Geeeesh! It never fails to amaze me the ignorance offered in well meaning answers..DO NOT RUB NOSE IN PEE OR POOP!
You will only have an untrusting and traumatized dog.
Your puppy is NOT rebelling..but is behaving normally..When I place a puppy, I always ask that they should expect a ‘honeymoon’ of the pup being an angel for the first 2 weeks, then , as it become more aware of its surroundings and fearful of dangers, imaginary, usually, they revert from behaving angel-like, and go through the ‘terrible twos’..just as with human children..Your pup is merely going through her ‘terrible twos’…very normally.
She needs to learn that outside is fun, and nothing to fear..Spend more time with her out of doors, not only when she has to poop or pee..Put a harness on her, if you are currently using a collar..sit out with her while you read a magazine, so she sees you are in control, and totally relaxed..
For potty training, Routine is the key..
Feed 4 times per day at the same times daily..Put the bowl away after 10 minutes..
Take her outside after every feeding. She will go about 10-15 minutes after being fed, at her age. It will take awhile for her to learn/develop bladder control, but potty should be easier. Feed on a strict schedule, so that she isn’t fed just before bedtime, as she will need to go shortly after being fed..Young pups should be fed and then walked 4 times per day, UNTIL THEY POOP…She will need more frequent outings for peeing…Walk her just before bedtime, to make certain she is empty..
Never scold for mistakes, but give lavish praise every time he goes outside, like she won the spelling bee…..Pups can only hold their pee for 1 hour, per month of age..So, its important to empty them just before bedtime..
Use the same word every time, such as ‘do the doody’, or whatever..
The most important thing is to watch her closely, and scoop him up and outside when she begins to act restless, turn circles, etc. Soon she will whine and look at you when she needs to go.
Be patient…If your patience wears thin, talk to your mom, and ask her how long it took to potty train you…How many times she changed your diaper, and bedding….raising a happy puppy takes all the patience of being a parent…
The shaking is raw fear..Stuffed toys, with any plastic removed may help her feel less abandoned..also, leaving an old (worn and not washed) piece of clothing with her when you are absent..Music or TV left on will help, as she won’t notice every noise that the ‘boogieman’ makes..You need to think of her as a toddler..and realize that she is as lonesome when left alone, as a human toddler would be..and expect a similar reaction..
If you are away for long periods, doggy day care may be the answer…Ours has a nursery for puppies, so call around to see which ones in your area does take puppies..
