How do I make my newborn’s mouth open wider for breastfeeding?
She only latches on the tip of my nipple and it’s sooo painful! I know it’s not right and I need to know how can I make her mouth open wider.
She’s only 3 weeks old.
Have you seen a lactation consultant yet? Sometimes babies have a hard time latching if they have a high pallet. Most insurances cover visits to the lactation consultant, all you have to do up front is pay the copay. She will be able to check your babies mouth and help you latch the baby on a couple of times so you and baby can get the hang of it.
The first couple of weeks are so hard and draining but it really does pay off! I had to break the latch several times before she would actually latch on correctly. Once she latches on, pull her bottom closer to you, which tilts her head just a little (not too much), this might make it a bit more comfortable.
