Nodachi Sword

how can i learn to use a sword properly? help plz?

ok so im 13 years old and i love swords and samurais. i bought samurai armour a while bak and i have all their weapons.. katanas, nodachi, yumi, naginatas and all those stuff. but i really want to learn how to use a katana since its usually the best weapon for a samurai. and please no answers about how im to young to be playing with swords.. if yuh can help me id really appreciate it. thanks =)

Actually, if I’m not mistaken, the samurai’s first choice of weapon was the naginata or the yumi. I’m pretty sure they favored pole arms over their swords when they had the space to use them.

By the way, don’t let anyone tell you you’re “too young for this”. You’re absolutely not. I wish I had started learning this stuff way sooner than I did (I started at 19). However, DON’T practice with live (sharp) blades: get a bokken (wooden swords). No school would ever let you practice with live blades anyway. I can absolutely guarantee you’ll injure yourself, possibly quite severely, if you attempt to handle a real sword without quite a bit of competence.

I’m not the most experienced person out there, but I would advise you to look into Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-Ryu (which is what I take). You’ll learn ALL the weapons you have there in this art, not just the katana (though the main focus is on the katana). This school covers Katana, Bo staff, Naginata, wakizashi, katana & wakizashi wielded together, the yumi, and there’s even a jujitsu (hand-to-hand) portion. You won’t learn all of them right away. You’ll always start with the katana and the bo follows relatively shortly. It’s extremely comprehensive, and if you’re as passionate as you sound, you’ll absolutely love it.

Kendo is also always an option, but keep in mind that Kendo is a sport based off real swordmanship: It’s not going to teach you the full potential of sword use.
