Which One Was The Best War Unit for an Army?
I agree with you, it is is not easy to give the right answer, and I can add it is not my intension to be the “expert” or the “sword fighting guru” of the 21st century.
How ever while you are reading this article sitting in front of your computer, 700 years ago, guys like you and me were preparing for war. They were ready for battle, equipped with the most advanced weaponry of their countries, and it is cool to ask ourselves: “Who was the best?”
Mongolian Heavy Cavalry
When we think about the Mongolian Army the first image that comes to our minds is an archer riding a horse, but we forget that there was a Mongolian Horse Man . The Mongolian cavalry were less equipped than others but it was faster, lighter and more flexible an it was very well organized.
Yes, the Mongolian Heavy Cavalry was equipped with bows and they were equipped with a very powerful sword similar to a Samurai Katana. This Mongolian troups used a particular combat technique.
They would ride towards the enemy, they would attack them with their bows they would do this 3 or 5 times until the enemy was weak enough to be attacked man to man with their swords.
Mameluc Cavalry
This guys were very smart. They had a rule, no horse man should go into battle if he is not equipped with a lance or a bow. They would attack first with their long lances, then strike with a saber. Instead of killing the enemy they would try to create fatal wounds so that the other army would need to take care of the wounded instead of fighting.
We have to admit it, this guy knew their jobs.
Saint John’s knights
Most people believe that templar knights were the only ones to protect the Holy Land. They forget that there was a more disciplined warrior: Saint John’s Soldier.
This knights were prepared to close combat. They were not rich and may not have had as many resources as the templar order did, and that’s why we admire them. With nothing but a long sword they defended the holy land and were as effective as other armies.
Now It is up to you to choose one of this 3 military units
