Pocket Watches Truly Are A Timeless Piece

Time and how we use it has always been important. The use of our time varies by our social standing and always has.

The minute hand of clocks in the 13th century was an indication of wealth and luxury. In the 16th century the pocket watch was developed and now every man could not only make use of his time but also know what time he was using. During that time only the rich could afford such an item. It became a status symbol to own a pocket watch. The clocks in the 16th century were termed “portable” or “pocket” watches but were actually placed in the home. It would not be until later that they were actually carried in the pocket. During the 17th century clock makers became artists as they began to design their watches. They moved to making rounded edges and adorning them with engravings. During the 18th century the watch was adorned with jewels making it an expensive piece to wear. The watch by this time was making great strides forward and now sported three hands, one for the hour, one for the minute and one for the second. Watches were also becoming much more accurate as new discoveries like the pendulum were made. The 19th century was the pocket watch boom century. Many of the well-known pocket watch designers came on to the scene during the 19th century. By the 20th century pocket watches were no longer in use by majority. However, they have continued to be a status symbol and a “must have” for gentlemen.

Though the use of these watches has somewhat diminished since the 19th century they are still very much a stylish and somewhat aristocratic statement. The wristwatch became the replacement of the pocket watch removing much of the art of watch making. Many pocket watches are family heirlooms. They are so well constructed that they last for decades being passed from father to son. There are not very many accessories that have almost exclusively been made for and used by men. They pocket watch, paired with a decorative chain, is one of those rare items. Adding class to a man’s wardrobe.

A pocket watch gives the idea that there is time to spare even though time is important. They imply that time is valuable as very often they are made with precious metals or decorated with jewels or engravings.

Pocket watches truly are a timeless piece.

Computer World

Computer World
