An open box is made from a 10 cm. by 20 cm. piece of tin by cutting a square from each corner and folding up..?

…the edges. The area of the resulting base is 96 cm^2. What is the length of the sides of the squares?

(10 – 2x)(20 – 2x) = 96

200 – 60x + 4x² = 96

4x² – 60x + 104 = 0

4(x² – 15x + 26) = 0

4(x – 13)(x – 2) = 0
x = 13, which is larger than the width, so dicard it, or x = 2

The sides of the squares that were cut off were 2″” on a side. <==ANSWER

This made the bottom 16" x 6" for an area of 96 in².
