Large Hunting

Im looking to buy a rifle. What a good all purpose rifle, Ill be hunting large Animals ( deers, Coyote ect.?

I was think 223, 30 6, 243? Give me your opinion…. Thanks

I would pick the 30-06 and here are the reasons why.
The 30-06 can drop a coyote at 600 yards if you’re a good shot. I have done so in fact I have dropped coyotes over 700 yards. If you use the right ammo you wont “blow up” the coyote but rather punch a 30 cal hole through him and turn his insides to jello. I keep coyote pelts in the winter and a plain small soft tip 165 gr spitzer boat tail bullet will just punch a neat hole through the coyote at long distance. If he’s close I would use a 110gr or 150 gr bullet.
Now that said I usually use a 22-250, .243 or a .223 for coyotes. But the 06’ will get you by.

Deer with the 06’ can be tricky due to too much meat damage or too little damage. What I mean is some big game bullets just don’t open up in a deer well and will pass through and the deer can run a bit before it dies. Or another types of bullets opens too fast and can damage too much meat. For small deer and antelope I use a 150 gr bullet made for light skinned animals in a pinch I will use the 165 gr SP boat tail or if it’s a 350 to 400 yard shot.
I have shot a hell of a lot of deer with the 06 and not one went over 30 feet, 90% dropped where they stood. Never lost one in 35 years.

Bigger game; the 06 can be used on big elk, moose and bear. Here I use the 165 gr, 180 gr, or the 220 gr bullets and prefer the core-lok type for deep penetration. All of these animals that I shot went down very fast, again most dropped where they stood.

I think the reason some had less agreeable experiences with the 06’ is from poor bullet selection and bullet placement.
For an all around gun the 06 is hard to beat and for reloaders it has many reloading options.

Other than the 06 I would say would be the .308, .270, 30-30, .243 and the 7.62×39.

One last thing about the 06, .308 and 30-30; you can go into any tiny town in Alaska, Canada or the lower 48 and a ma and pop store will carry that ammo.
