Thrilling Chinese Miao games

Who are the Miao?

Residing in the mountainous south and southwestern China, the Miao ethnic group have a long history and splendid culture. Their embroidery, silver jewelry, and batik art is second to none in the world. Across the Miao areas, different groups have different customs, but there are some unique games which you may have never heard of.

Climbing a knife ladder

A Miao knife ladder is 12 meters high, with 72 knives as rungs. Cut their hair or a piece of cloth with the knives, the climbers will first show to people they are extremely sharp.

The unshod performers then start to climb the knife ladder, and their feet don't get any hurt. When they climb, they will perform some acrobatic feats like flips.

Walking on the flaming iron board

To start this game, an iron board has coals burned on it for over 1 hour and can reach temperatures over 800 degrees Celsius.

Barefooted, the Miao artist starts to walk onto the iron boards.  You can see smoke flying off of his/her feet, but miraculously their feet aren't hurt at all.

The iron boards are then put into the water, which immediately boils and a cloud of white steam rises up.

Horse fighting

Horse fights and horse races are all held on June 6 of the lunar calendar, to express the Miao wishes for a good harvest.

The breathtaking horse fighting sports draw the attention of a lot of people. Girls will dress up with beautiful silver ornaments like silver bracelets, as this is also a holiday for them to have fun.

Two horses are taken into a big circus, and then the games starts. The two horses at once involves in a furious combat after they meet. They combat with each other frantically. After several fighting bouts, one horse is beaten and escapes, with the other pursuing after it.

People around the playground shout and cheer for the horses. At last a red cloth band will be adorned on the body of the winner as a reward.

Horse races

Horse races are held on steep mountain roads. While the game starts, the rider stands 5 or 6 meters away behind the horse.

Running to jump onto the back of the horse, the rider then at once goes for a gallop. As there is no saddle on the horse, the rider needs to have his legs clinging to the body of the horse, so he won't fall off.

It's absolutely an astonishing competition. The winner will get a prize, and may even win the love of the local girls.
