Is the Ontario Bagwell Bowie a full tang knife?

Yours is a very good question as well as a difficult one to answer. Normally, I’d pass a question like this and go onto something else; but, I have fond memories of Bill Bagwell, and his beautiful knives.

When I originally met Bill he was just starting to become well-known. The man was a gentleman to his backbone, and generous by nature. (I carried a sharpening stone that Bill once gave me for many years.)

I’m going to attempt to answer your question: ‘Full tang’ is a tricky term. Most of the early bowies had a form of full tang referred to as a, ‘stick tang’. Some of the modern lower priced, ‘look alike’ ‘Bagwell Bowies’ are fabricated with either a partial tang or a rat-tail tang.

There are a lot of, both, licensed and look alike Bagwell Bowies presently on the market. I strongly suspect that many of them are fabricated with partial tangs. The better ones are going to have full-length stick tangs; some of the very best will have metal cross members interspaced along the stick tang in order to hold the handle’s cross pins.

Because full length tangs of any sort are going to be more expensive to make, the, ‘Bagwell Bowie’ you’re looking at, probably, has a partial tang or, maybe, a rat tail tang. I’ve seen coffin-handled Bowies made all three ways. I’m, also, sure I’ve seen and held various Bagwell Bowies, too; but they were by the man, himself, priced at well over $1,000.00; and, as memory serves me, they were all full tang.
