How do I unstick my brown sugar?

I got one of those cookies in a jar things as a gift, you know the ones with layers of the different ingredients in a nice glass jar. Now on about the third layer there is a layer of brown sugar, when I tried to get it out it was so solid i coukld barely scrape it even with a knife. Any suggestions on how to get it out?

Heard an old wives tale to put a slice of regular bread in there and close the lid for a day. Suppose to keep brown sugar from hardening and may sofetn yours?
