Knight Chain
Did the Scottish ever have knights in plate armor?
I know they had knights of the lords of Scotland but did they ever wear anything more than chain mail armor, more particularly suits of plate armor?
I’m Scottish (well mostly lol) just was wondering.
The clansmen certainly did not have plate armour, at best they had leather and bits of chain mail.
scottish nobles from around the lowlands and border areas certainly had access to plate mail and had the funds to actually buy it.
during the middle ages Scotland was one of the most powerful and richest countries in Europe this was reflected in how its nobility dressed for war.
that said full plate mail was not common anywhere in Britain until the late 14th century, (and even then only to the very richest members of the nobility) until that point most knights wore chain mail and a plate helmet, (so basically Scottish and English knights during much of the wars of Independence were as well equipped as each other)
