No, you won’t be at fault if you’re not aware of causing any physical trauma, but as others have said, he does need to be seen by a vet.

He’s a great guy and keeps and breeds tortoises himself – or at least, he did when I lived back in the UK. He was always very generous with his advice as we both kept a particularly uncommon species.

At the very least he’ll be able to recommend a vet closer to you who would be open to taking his advice if they were not, personally, very experienced with tortoises.
