How do I ice sugar cookies?
I just have normal cake icing which I put food coloring in to make purple. I don’t have anything other than a butter knife to ice the cookies and when I tried the first time the icing kept getting everywhere 
Is there a certain way to do it?
First, you aren’t supposed to ice sugar cookies. You’re supposed to sprinkle coarse ground sugar on top of the panned, unbaked cookies, then bake them like that. Second, if you don’t do that, then just take some powdered sugar, a little vanilla and your food colouring, and add some hot water while stirring until it is thin enough to spread but still thick like cake icing would be. Put that on top of the cookies. Or you can make it thinner and then drizzle it over the cookies. You might like that idea better.
If you want to do the drizzle thing, then you can just dip anything (like the tips of your fingers or a spatula) into the icing, then pull out and immediately move it back and forth a few inches above the cookies while it drips over them. Do that as many times as it takes to cover the cookies the amount you want them covered with icing.
If you insist on using your cake icing, then stir it up nice and smooth. Next, take a cookie, hold it in your hand on the edges with your thumb and middle finger, then (while holding it this way) pat the top of cookie on the icing so that some icing sticks to it. You can make a little twist motion with your hand when you pull it away to make the top look nicer. That’s how professionals do it with other types of cookies.
