Campus crime safety: what you need to know Parents and children are now feeling quite vulnerable due to the high rate of crimes committed on campus. It is because of this high crime rate that all students should be aware that attending high school has become a place where personal safety must be portrayed and being able to take care of themselves is a crucial way of college life. Here are some things that are worth knowing for all attending college.

Self Defense devices. It is worth knowing that there are multiple Defense items that you can buy to protect yourself. These are pepper sprays, stun guns, tasers and pocket knives. The list goes on but these seem to be the most efficient. Taser guns are very effective and popular but the pepper spray is the greatest chance you will of making a fast exit from your attacker. The pepper spray is also widely used by females as they are usually in greater danger by muggers and prowling molesters. In saying this and hoe effective these items are, if you do not have access to these there are everyday items that we possess that could save us from being attacked. These include sharp objects. Pens and our car keys. That’s why it’s vital that you keep these items close and accessible wherever you may go.

Good judgement and common sense. There is something even greater than having these items with you. That is your judgement. Always try to avoid placing yourself in dangerous situations. Use your natural instinct and always travel in a crowd if at all possible. Even in your car always have the doors locked even when you’re inside or out. Never advertise your valuables in your back seat always have them out of sight store them in the trunk or better still don’t carry valuables that have to be left in the car. Upon leaving your car make sure that it is safe have a good look around before leaving the vehicle.try to park your car where the building you’re entering is visible from the car. Dark pathways and alleyways are to be avoided at all times. Another safety factor is to make sure you don’t stand out. This can be avoided by not wearing valuable jewellery as today this flaunting of wealth is not a popular act but a dangerous one. Again always be aware when jogging or walking, don’t have ears filled with music. You need your hearing to be your protector. If you feel suddenly that you being watched or followed redirect yourself and head towards safety. And this being a place, where there are other people and a well lit area.

Confidence and Strength No matter how you feel, make sure that on the outside you appear confident and look indestructible. Always remember, criminals do not attack strong people who can take care of themselves. But the opposite, the weak and vulnerable, that’s why you must portray yourself as hard as nails. That way you are less likely to become a target. Again, always have that aware button turned on, and always keep an eye on who is moving around you and always be in a crowd.

Travelling with Companions Always travel in numbers, off campus or on campus. If it is not possible always use the public safety escort service while you are on campus. Atm machines are a classic area of attack. Be aware of who is around the atm machine; make sure there are other customers waiting in line. If there isn’t, be extra vigilant and aware. Yet again, be extra careful and if you need money at night, be organised and go to the atm at lunchtime.

Self Defense Training There might be a situation that arises where you will have to protect yourself physically. To be able to do this there are various self Defense classes and martial art classes that will teach you how to protect yourself. These classes are of great value as these defensive training sessions are designed with the criminal and his strategies in mind. Therefore you will not be surprised when attacked and you will have the retaliation moves. These classes are quite easy to join and if you would prefer to train in private there are also videos available.

Partying with Caution Okay, now there are a lot of parties in college, and very normal behaviour to attend. Yet, these again are areas which you have to be extra cautious but still enjoy yourself. Make sure you know your body and its limits, especially when it comes to alcohol. We all need to chill out and tone down but excessive consumption of alcohol has its negative characters as well as its positives. Our judgement is less effective. Our decisions are radical and our Defenses are down. Therefore it is essential to have a plan before we drink. Make sure you have friends that are in agreement that you all leave together when you are finished. Make sure there is a designated driver and that you never drink and drive.try and avoid drinking heavily or if possible avoid it all together. You can always enjoy yourself without being intoxicated.
