Are gut hook knives illegal to carry on the streets in California?

Just to expand on roscoedeadbeat’s answer. The only knives which are generally illegal to possess in California are switch blade knives with blades over 2 inches long. (PC 653k.) However, any fixed blade knife can be a dirk or dagger, making it illegal to conceal on the person or in a vehicle. (PC 12020.) As noted, a knife in a sheath on the belt is not concealed. That does not mean you have to carry it that way; any way of NOT concealing it is permissible.

As roscoe noted, there are places where knife possession (or possession of knives with certain blade lengths) are illegal. There also may be some local (county or city) law which is applicable. But, in general, the answer to your question is “no.”
