CAn you sharpen a blade that is already blued?

I have a katana that is made of Damascus steel (well the best we can replicate it to the “original” Damascus steel) and it has been blued like a shotgun barrel. Is there an effective way I can sharpen it without damaging the fact that its blued?

I have no idea why you would blue a katana, however the actual process of sharpening a katana is not like sharpening a knife. The process is actually kind of a sharpening polish which involves removing some of the surface steel from the sword since you need to keep the geometry of the blade consistent while redefining the edge. Focusing entirely on the edge will screw up the geometry of the sword. So to properly polish a Japanese sword you would have to get down to the steel itself. If the sword you have is expensive then this is not something that would be recommended since you can completely destroy your sword, but if it is cheap then it may be something you can use to teach yourself how to do the process.
