how far are we from building a gundam?

is it possible in the near future that we will see anything like a gundam being built, mostly likely for the purpose of war like in the TV show or is the idea just too far fetched?
maybe not a “gundam”(since we do not have gundamnian alloy) but something along the lines of a mobile suit or mecha that we see in japanese anime. i know the thought of beam cannons and beam swords are hard to conceive right now but maybe a mobile suit w/ a cannon, machine gun, saber is quite possible right?
i’ve seen those videos on youtube where the japanese have made robots(like the mobile suits) big enough to seat a person but in those videos they didnt come close to the functions of a gundam.
just wondering if we will see any of this technology in the near future. any thoughts?

Very interesting notion! Mobile suits may not be the greatest strategy, and would be a little farfetched to the mainstream….But, seeing as especially military technology is advancing every day, I’d sure say it is possible (at least as some rich anime fan’s folly). See, if this were the early 90′s, I probably would not agree.
