Inch Stainless

Arc welding 1/16th inch stainless steel…. im having problems?
im welding this pipe to a much thicker flange, most of the time it comes out good, but other times, i get a huge hole in the thin pipe that grows and grows… its set on 40 amps… lowest it goes, and the slag isnt coming off very nice either, any suggestions?
Concentrate your arc on the thickest piece of material and try going to a smaller electrode diameter, if you can get a smaller rod you might not have such an agressive arc and burn through shouldn’t be as bad.
Honestly I’ve never arc welded stainless less than 3/16, we always TIG anything thinner.
