(09/21/2010) Horse Section: What would you do…?

You’re galloping your horse in a huge field, happy as can be. You feel like you’re flying. You decide to race against your friends horse. You line up, preparing for the race. You’re mare suddenly rears up, pawing at her face. She manages to get one foot stuck in the bridle. Your horse is nervously hopping around with one foot stuck in the bridle. You jump off and try to take the bridle off, but your horse is so spooked that she tries to bolt and falls over, thrashing around on the ground. What do you do? (The reason she reared was a bee stung her. You have no knife with you.)

My only safe option in that situation would be to wait until he (I have a gelding, not a mare) calms down and stops thrashing. Then I would approach him talking quietly and calmly. As soon as I could safely get close to him, I would quickly but patiently undo the bridle and back away. I’m sure that as soon as he realizes his foot is loose, he would immediately get up (which is why I would back away). As soon as he is standing, I would try to get the bridle back on him (or at least tie reins around his neck), and have my friend hold him while I looked him over for injuries and felt his legs for heat. I would them patiently lead him back to the barn where I would give him lots of treats and love and treat him for any injuries he might have sustained.
