What is the little keypad thingy you see above the handle on car doors in the usa?

it is a code to unlock the door. like say if your kid wants something out of your car, but don’t wanna give them the key. or if your an idiot like me and go shopping, have lunch with auntie, walk back to your car, realize your keys aren’t in your purse and go, “is that my car running!!”
