Why do formal (and some other) gloves have lines on the top of the hand?

I’ve often wondered, why do some formal (i.e. like military white gloves) gloves have the 3 lines on top of the hand, sometimes I see them on some fashionable leather gloves. Is there a particular reason or origin of this design?

I’ve thought about this myself, I’m guessing it’s because the back of your hand has 3 lines that stick out from your tendons when you lay your hand flat
